The living room is one of the most important spaces in the home. It’s where you go to relax after a long day and spend time with your family. You may also have friends and guests round so you need to make sure that it’s a welcoming place to be.
The furniture is one of the most important elements to achieve this, but it’s something that people often get wrong. It doesn’t seem that hard to pick out a sofa, a couple of chairs and a coffee table and be done, right? Unfortunately, it’s not always this simple and there are plenty of mistakes that you could make. The end goal for a living room is for it to have a good atmosphere. It should be a space that you can’t wait to get back to after a long day!

If you’re currently decorating or picking out new furniture for your living room, here are my top tips to choosing the right living room furniture.
Always Measure Twice
The most obvious mistake you can make is not measuring properly. It would be super annoying to get your dream sofa home, only to find that it takes up the entire room. Remember, if you’re shopping in store, furniture seems to look a lot smaller. Then, when you get them home, you realise how much bigger it is!
Always measure and then measure again just to be extra sure and be generous with the space that you allow around the furniture. You need to be able to move around easily and put the rest of the furniture in the room as well.
One thing that people sometimes forget, which is absolutely essential, is to measure the doorways. I remember excitedly buying our L-shape sofa when we were still in our flat.. on the third floor.. We wasn’t really thinking about the logistics when we purchased it. But it all worked out okay!
If you’re buying flatpack furniture this isn’t such a huge issue but if you’re buying ready built, you need to measure up all of the doorways on the way into the room. The last thing you want is to bring your dream sofa home, only to find out that you can’t get it into the room.
Getting Rid Of Old Furniture
Obviously you can’t get an old 3 piece suite and a coffee table in your bin. You may be able to fit it in the back of your car and take it to the tip but that’s a bit of a hassle. And the last thing you want is your unwanted furniture sitting outside your house for the world to see.
Companies such as Same Day Rubbish Removal can deal with old lounges easily so you don’t have to go through the trouble of doing it yourself. It’s ideal to arrange this for the same day that your new furniture arrives so you haven’t got two lots of it!
Visual weight is an important concept when you’re picking furniture. This is the weight that a piece of furniture appears to have and how much space it commands in the room. As an example, a heavy coffee table with thick legs has a high visual weight compared to a more streamlined one. This is especially important when you’re furnishing a small room because if you pick items with a large visual weight, they’ll make the room feel very build up.
Choose A Style
Pinterest is my favourite tool for getting interior design inspiration. However, I like so many different styles and I’m so indecisive! Sometimes, I love a minimalistic look, then boho, then colourful Moroccan vibes! For our living room, I’ve really tried to hone in on one style and colour scheme. We try to only buy furniture that fits our chosen style, otherwise it could turn out looking very mismatched!
Ensure It’s Fit For Purpose
Whilst I was pregnant and shopping for living room furniture, I was drawn to pieces that I knew would not be practical once a baby/toddler was here. If there’s going to be children in your home now or in the near future, unfortunately some gorgeous pieces of furniture just won’t work. We replaced our rectangle coffee table that had sharp corners for round coffee tables as an example. A large leaning mirror also wasn’t safe anymore so ensure they are fixed to the wall! Lastly, soft fabrics and upholstery are probably going to be a no-go with little fingers! Don’t fret, there is always a fabulous alternative for every no-go!
If you follow these rules, you’ll be able to get perfect living room furniture every single time. Enjoy shopping for new furnishings!
