A bit of a life update: we have bought our first home!! It’s a dream come true but also the scariest feeling ever. Here come the real responsibilities of being in our own home. Hopefully it won’t feel too different to renting right!?
So a little bit of the back story.
We reserved a new build property not too far from where we live and work a few months ago. Jonny and I had slightly different feelings towards the type of property we were going to buy; he would only consider new builds. I love the cleanliness and newness of a new build but I also like some character to a home which new builds do not usually have, but, I see it as a blank canvas that we can do whatever we want to over time and now I must admit, I’m glad we can just move in and not have to worry about work that needs doing. I think it’s going to take me a long time to realise that we can do what we want to the house having only rented and also thinking we may never be able to buy.
Getting onto the property ladder in 2017 is ridiculously hard. Especially whilst renting and paying to commute etc. The only advice I can give is save anything you can, check out the help to buy scheme or help to buy ISA’s with your bank and borrow what you can. The sooner you get onto the ladder, if that’s what you want to do, the better.
Our move in date is in December, however the build could be ready from the beginning of November. There could also be delays meaning it could run into next year. This time of year is when I start to really get back into my love for interior design and the look and feel of my home. This is because I spent more time indoors (I hate being cold) and love making the space in which I live feel warm, cosy, well-lit and finished off with a beautiful scent. We needed to choose all of our flooring, tiling and kitchen finishes for the new home which has meant lots of pinnin’ on Pinterest so we can make the right decisions.
Going from a 1 bedroom flat to a 3 bedroom home means lots of shopping for new furniture and accessories – yay! Here are some things on my shopping list that I am currently loving. I love the look of nordic furniture that will tie in with our dining set.
I have fallen in love with French style beds and extra tall headboards – they scream luxury and make such a statement. If you feel the same, I urge you to check out The French Bedroom Company – so many beautiful things!
To cosy-up a living area, layer textured throws, rugs and cushions in a variety of prints and plains. I love Moroccan colours and the traditional woven Berber print on rugs and mismatched cushions and throws adorning the sofa. For bedding, I’m quite minimal and stick to plain white, with some lace, broderie anglaise or pintucks.
Crisp, white, cotton duvet sets look so clean and simplistic
To finish off the look and feel of our home, I am going in to invest in a large mirror (for those outfit shots ha) but also to make the rooms feel more spacious, luxurious scents from Diptyque, The White Company and Jo Malone, collections of prints and fairy lights.
