If you prefer to be up and dressed quickly instead of spending endless amounts of time looking through your wardrobe agonising over what you’re going to wear, a minimalist wardrobe and fashion approach might be the best style option for you.
The first step towards minimalist fashion is quality over quantity; buy fewer high-quality pieces that you can use in multiple ways to create a range of outfits. This doesn’t mean you have to limit your wardrobe to only 5 or 15 items of clothing, but it does mean thinking carefully about what you put into your wardrobe. If an item isn’t functional and doesn’t fit with what you already have (special occasions aside) it probably doesn’t have a place in your collection.
Take a minimalistic approach to your wardrobe by getting rid of anything that is unnecessary. This might sound difficult, but it’s actually quite easy. Firstly, think about the look and aesthetics you want your outfits to reflect. Do you want to be chic and sophisticated or do you want a rock-chick edge? Or, do you love bohemian vibes? Once you know this, you can go through your wardrobe taking out anything that doesn’t fit with your chosen style.
Next, look for anything that is old and doesn’t fit or that you simply can’t see yourself ever wearing again. Get rid of that too. Every few weeks I do a bit of a cull in my wardrobe and fill up bags of pieces I no longer wear or need. This gives me more available space in my wardrobe, plus H&M have a recycling scheme where each bag gets you a £5 off voucher so you can treat yourself to something new and start building your capsule wardrobe.
Here are some minimalist fashion must-have pieces…
An Amazing Pair of Jeans
Jeans are probably the most versatile item in any wardrobe because they can be worn in any season. They are super easy to dress up or down for both day and night looks.
The key is to find a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly, are strong enough to withstand multiple washes and fit with your style aesthetic. Extra pairs in addition to the perfect pair can include a darker wash for more formal occasions and another less expensive pair for running errands etc.
A Classic Coat
Coats are one of my favourite things to buy because there are so many different styles, however, if you are serious about having a minimalist wardrobe, you need to choose one in a classic style that will go with anything. A good-quality biker jacket is a good choice because they look good with jeans, dresses, leggings and pretty much anything. Pea coats, trenches, denim jackets and swing coats are also really versatile options. You just need to work out which coat fits your aesthetic the best and which style will be most appropriate for you in your local weather conditions.
A Quality Cashmere Knit
Classic knitwear will never go out of style and cashmere is probably the epitome of quality in knitwear, so it makes sense to buy at least one garment made from it. When you’re shopping, buy knitted pieces in a style and colour that’s unlikely to go out of fashion and/or make you look older. Black, white, grey and cream are all good colour choices. Or, if you like a pop of colour, I’d recommend reds and blues. Of course, if you aren’t worried about following trends, you could choose something a bit more interesting like a lavender sweater or fuschia cardigan.
A Button-Down Shirt
Clean and crisp white shirts look so timeless with jeans, skirts and trousers, as long as they fit you well. Opt for natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or silk for a more attractive drape, extra comfort and longevity.
A Form-Fitting T-Shirt
The t-shirt is undoubtedly a must-have wardrobe essential that can be worn with almost everything. Buy a handful in various colours – white, black, navy and grey are all timeless colours. Ensure the fabric is a strong cotton and they will perfectly complement any bottoms you wear them with.
A Little Black Dress
For formal occasions, nothing is more sophisticated than a simple little black dress. Find one that suits your figure and that you can style in different ways. Using various accessories, cover-ups and shoes you can make it look different each time you wear it. This will be so much easier than having to shop for a new dress for every special event.
