Four Interior Design Tips For Small Rooms

Large white decorative mirror showing how space can look bigger

Whether it’s a living room, dining room, or bedroom, if it’s small in size, it might not feel as easy to work with. It can be difficult to fit everything into a small space without it feeling uncomfortable, and even if you manage to do this, it very rarely looks particularly stylish or luxurious.

Luckily, despite feeling trapped, there are a few things that you can do to open up the space and make the illusion of it being a lot bigger. Here are four interior design tips to help you do this.

1. Keep It Light

A lighter room always looks a lot bigger and brighter than a darker one, so firstly, light up your space as much as you can. Natural light always opens up a room more than artificial, so if you have access to it, open your curtains and let it shine through. If you don’t, it’s important that you add a few different light sources to your room, such as various lamps, rather than only using your main light, as this rarely brightens up your whole room well. Painting your room in cooler colours will also help, as it will reflect light back into the room.

2. Make It With Mirrors

A well-placed mirror can be like magic for a small room, as they give the illusion of depth, and reflect natural and artificial light, making your room a lot brighter.

You can find relatively cheap mirrors almost anywhere, but if you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, you can view them here. To make the most of your mirror, place it near a window, angled towards the focal point of the room.

3. Go Multifunctional

An obvious way to make a small room seem bigger is to reduce the amount of furniture that you have in there. Although, this might seem impossible, as seating, a table, and storage space are all essentials in your room. Luckily, there’s plenty of multifunctional or multipurpose furniture out there, so you could easily find a bench that also works as a table, and has space inside for storage.

As our new house is quite small, I have been looking out for pieces that look nice but also have purpose of storing things that I don’t want on show. I need to make the most of every bit of space I have! Ottomans are amazing pieces of furniture that look luxe in their upholstered fabrics but can also store all of your shoes! I plan to get a new bed with underneath storage and a chic ottoman to sit at the end of it. Wire side tables also look so cute and cosy in your living room filled with your spare blankets or magazines!

4. Stick To The Same

When it comes to adding drapes and furniture to your room, you could consider choosing things that are the same colour as your walls, or a couple of shades lighter or darker. This helps your furniture to blend into the colour of the walls, which will make the room seem a lot larger. Sheer drapes will also help to create a sense of depth, and clear furniture, like a glass table, will give the illusion that there is more floor space, which makes the room seem larger.

Usually when you think of a small room, you imagine being cramped and uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Making a small room seem larger isn’t always very easy, but it also isn’t impossible task, and if you do it correctly, the results can be amazing. I hope these tips helped!
